3 secrets of healthy living after kidney transplant

We all know we need to live a healthy lifestyle post kidney transplant. It’s crucial to keep our kidney healthy in the long run. However, sometimes knowing it is just not enough…

I experienced it myself. I knew I needed to practice sports. I knew I needed to eat healthy. Yet, somehow I found myself occupied with house chores or work emails instead.

Our lives are full of important things to do, work, children, cooking, cleaning, etc. There is always something more important to do rather than investing time in ourselves. 
I believe the answers to this is motivation and optimism. And it’s something you can learn. You just need to work on it.

I have experienced a motivation shortage myself. Luckily, I found a way to keep my motivation high and take care of myself. 
I want to share with you my 3 top tips on how to maintain your motivation high to keep your transplanted kidney healthy for years:


  1. Calendarize as a way of life

    Block time in your calendar. Set a meeting with yourself to do something for you. It could be anything: sports, meditation, walking around, coffee corner, reading time. The important part is to commit to it. Schedule things that make you happy in your calendar. You will look at your agenda happily seeing that your week ahead is not only full of meetings but also coffee breaks, walks with your husband, quality time with your son, sports time or cooking time with your grandmother.
  1. Positive thinking

Every night before you fell asleep, find 3 good things that happened to you during the day and be grateful. It can be even “I had an amazing lunch with my wife”. You will learn to appreciate the simple and good things that are present in your life. Everyday. 

   3. Understand the WHY

Having a long-term goal in mind will help you navigate towards it. The easiest way to do it is to first write it down. It can be on a piece of paper in your wallet. On a Post-It on your fridge or on your mirror. Or on your bed table next to a photo you like. The important thing is to be able to see it often. This way you will remember WHY you are motivated to be healthy and happy.

Being a healthy kidney recipient is a marathon. Not a sprint.
